On May 19, 2026, the Mathematics Education Seminar was held in the Yifu Building Auditorium of RDFZ. The event was organized by the School of Mathematics and Science Education and the Mathematics Education Research Center of the Beijing Institute of Education, and hosted by the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China (RDFZ). Themed "Educational Practice on the Development of Algebraic Thinking and the Integration of Mathematical Culture," the seminar aimed to explore practical pathways for cultivating students' core competencies and subject-specific values, and to build a high-quality platform for mathematics education exchange and cooperation within and beyond Beijing.

Attendees at the opening ceremony included Xiao Wen, Standing Committee Member of the CPC Committee and Vice President of the Beijing Institute of Education; Mi Qi, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of RDFZ and the Affiliated Schools System, Principal of RDFZ, and Executive Vice Principal of the RDFZ Affiliated Schools System; Dr. Zhang Jianyue, President of the Secondary School Mathematics Teaching Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Education; Professor Jia Suijun of Zhejiang International Studies University; Liang Liping, Vice Principal of RDFZ; Yan Yaodong, Deputy Director of the Academic Affairs Office of the Beijing Institute of Education; and Zhang Xuebing, Associate Dean of the School of Mathematics and Science Education at the Beijing Institute of Education. More than 260 mathematics teachers participated in the seminar, including mathematics teaching researchers from various districts in Beijing, key teacher program trainees, frontline teacher representatives, and a renowned teacher team from Zhejiang. The opening ceremony was moderated by Associate Professor Feng Qilei, Director of the Mathematics Department at the Beijing Institute of Education.

RDFZ Principal Mi Qi gave the opening welcome address. He noted that mathematics is a core discipline for shaping thinking and cultivating competency, and that as the era of artificial intelligence accelerates, mathematics education should place greater emphasis on the intersection and integration of mathematics and AI. RDFZ has consistently eschewed a singular exam-oriented approach, focusing on building mathematics classrooms of depth and intellectual rigor, and will continue to uphold an open and inclusive attitude, learning from colleagues across the city to jointly cultivate the fertile ground of mathematics education.

Xiao Wen, Standing Committee Member of the CPC Committee and Vice President of the Beijing Institute of Education, then delivered his remarks. He emphasized that the current reform of the basic education mathematics curriculum in China is in a deepening stage of transition toward "core competencies." "Algebraic thinking" embodies the abstraction and structure of mathematics, while "mathematical culture" is an important window for understanding the nature of mathematics; integrating the two holds strong practical significance for overcoming the pedagogical challenge of students being able to calculate but unable to think. He encouraged all attending teachers to "come with questions, actively participate in exchange, and focus on practical application," organically incorporating the seminar's outcomes into frontline teaching practice.

In the keynote report session, four experts provided deep academic guidance from different perspectives on mathematics education practice.

Professor Jia Suijun of Zhejiang International Studies University presented on the topic "The History of Algebra and Its Pedagogical Implications," revealing the cultural context of the development of algebraic thinking and its implications for teaching through a systematic review of the evolution of algebra's history.

Professor Liu Chunyan of the School of Mathematics and Science Education at the Beijing Institute of Education delivered her report via video, on the topic "Understanding the Mathematics Curriculum from the Perspective of the Discipline's Origin and Development," guiding teachers to grasp the nature of the mathematics curriculum from a holistic view of the discipline.

Sun Fang, Head of the Mathematics Teaching and Research Group at RDFZ, presented a comprehensive sharing on "The Distinctive Features of Mathematics Teaching at RDFZ," showcasing the school's excellent experience in building high-quality classrooms and subject-based education.

Renowned teacher teams from Beijing and Zhejiang simultaneously presented 6 high-level research lessons in various sub-venues, vividly demonstrating practical pathways for "integrating algebraic thinking development with mathematical culture."

Junior High Grade 9 Venue: Chen Shiwen of the Experimental School affiliated with Jiaxing, Zhejiang Normal University, taught "One Picture, One World: The Path of Algebra in Quadratic Functions."

Articulated Venue: Zuo Lihua of RDFZ taught "From Quadratic to Cubic: Exploring the Roots of Equations."

Junior High Grade 8 Venue: He Qingqing of RDFZ taught "The Visible Equation and △."

Junior High Grade 8 Venue: Wang Zheng of Beijing No. 5 High School Affiliated School taught "The Order of Points and Lines — Discovery and Proof of Desargues' Theorem."

Senior High Grade 10 Venue: Si Jian of RDFZ taught "Expanding the Number System with Logic, Recognizing Complex Numbers through Binary Structure."

Senior High Grade 11 Venue: Zhang Zhenhuan of Beijing Zhongguancun Middle School taught "A Further Inquiry into Complex Numbers."

In response to the above exemplary lessons, Dr. Zhang Jianyue, Professor Jia Suijun, Yu Jingning (teaching researcher at the Fengtai District Institute of Education in Beijing), Wang Yanjing (Vice Principal of the Daxing Experimental School of Beijing Jingshan School), Li Hailong (teaching researcher at the Changping District Teachers' College of Beijing), Sun Fang (Head of the Mathematics Teaching and Research Group at RDFZ), Ma Ping (Deputy Director of the Haidian District Teachers' College of Beijing), and the mathematics team of the Beijing Institute of Education provided commentary in the respective venues. The experts highly praised the exemplary lessons, pointing out that the lessons demonstrated deep thinking on the integration of algebraic thinking and mathematical culture — through structural design, students experienced the complete thinking process of "discovering, posing, and proving problems"; meanwhile, by introducing the historical background of mathematics, students gained a profound appreciation for the process by which mathematical knowledge emerged and its necessity.

This seminar not only showcased the phased training outcomes of the Beijing Institute of Education in mathematics teacher training and evaluation research, but also provided valuable practical samples for frontline mathematics teachers on how to "optimize curriculum structure, implement core competencies, help students deepen their understanding of the nature of mathematics, and construct a mathematically meaningful knowledge system" in classroom teaching.
